May 3rd
The traditional Long May Weekend was probably ruined for a lot of people! You don't want snow falling into your barbecue.
Me, I was snug at home, and laughing like an evil person.

51/365: Snowy Germany
A photo from the train ride home. It was very crowded, but we had seats because we got on at the first stop, in Dresden. After the border, people were packed like sardines.

44/365: Guten Morgen Dresden
Remember how I said we hoped the spring had come? Guess not. First morning of work in Dresden, the snow came down like crazy.
By the time we were in the tram it was a regular blizzard.
It didn't last, but the cold certainly did. Brrr. I ended up wearing all of my changes of clothes at the same time.

23/365: Little shantytown
January 23rd
2011 is certainly turning out to be the Year of Abandoned Places. Here is a little cluster of trailers and shacks, empty under the snow. I was careful in approaching but I didn't have to get very close to know nobody was there. If I didn't go further it was because of the snow. So thick, it could hide wells and pits and other hazards. I wasn't in the mood to break a leg.

20/365: Snowy trees
So, even though I am trying to win a trip to the North Pole (your votes are welcome, by the way) it's not because I don't get to see any snow at home. Mid-deluge, winter decided to make a comeback.
I just happened to have a riding class today, and it's way out on the edge of town, right by the airport, where there's lots of wilderness. I'm happy I was up before the snow melted off the branches.
Some more photos from that day:
This is where I was glad to have my big tall wellies:
The quickest way for me to get to the stables is to take the bus to the airport and then follow a shortcut around the fence.
The Lodz airport is very small for a city this size, with only one runway and a handful of planes a day, so it's nice to catch one without planning for it.
Like I said...very glad I had my wellies.

16/365: Mound of snow
January 16th
That's all the snow from the Manufaktura shopping centre parking lot piled up in one huge, dirty mound. I kinda wanted to climb it, but we were in a hurry.

11/365: Horses
Third horseriding lesson. The snow melted then froze over again, so we couldn't go in the round pen because it was solid ice. However because we are total beginners the trainer said it wasn't a loss, we could just go longeing in the field and learn a bit of technique. In my world, that means 'try not to bounce around like a ragdoll while the horse trots'. I am not graceful. But evidently I am not hopeless, either, as she said that on friday's lesson we could ditch the longe and just ride by ourselves. So awesome. I have no idea what I'm doing but it's fun :D

1/365: Happy New Year!
So much sparkle! Happy New Year!
- a photo diary of every day of the year (those who have kids or other ongoing evolving projects should find this most convincing)
- an excellent way to improve your photography (without really even trying!)
- a creative project! We all need something creative in our lives.
- a great incentive to carry your camera everywhere you go (have you ever said 'I wish I'd had my camera on me'? Yes? Then this project is for you.)
- a good way never to find yourself saying 'I need to take a picture of that some day.' SOME DAY IS TODAY!
And now for the description which originally went with this photo:
Lodz is a flat city. Very flat. Its highest point is a semi-artificial mound piled in 1969 to create a small (K-15) ski-jumping slope. No bleachers or judge tower were ever built, and the slope fell into ruin in the eighties. I hear some resourceful young volunteers fixed it up just this last year. Interesting to note that people had already been ski jumping from the natural portion of the mound in the 1930s.
Anyway, the mound itself stands 230 m above sea level and is called Rudzka Góra, which means 'Mountain of Ore', as it lies in an area of town where bog iron used to be extracted. There's an artificial bobsleigh track that runs up the top (awesome fun), and when half the town showed up to watch the fireworks they all clambered up by holding on to the lift cable.
You can see part of the track in the photo, behind the people. On an ordinary day you're not supposed to climb over the fence and get that close to the track and the equipment, but New Year's Eve is special. You're probably not supposed to launch fireworks haphazardly in a crowd, either, but that's what people did. I did not get hit, but it was close. Fireworks are stupid, but they're a beautiful kind of stupid. From the Rudzka Góra, I saw them go off all over town. I didn't get exactly the shot I wanted, but I got others which were equally good, and next year I know what to do.
No one got hurt, it was loud, it was beautiful, I had the best time. I don't like parties at all, but on New Year's there's an inevitable pressure to do Something, so I am always looking for a good place to be that doesn't involve drinking and dancing. Especially since I'm never invited anywhere that WOULD involve it!
365/365: Waiting for the New Year
I went up on the Rudzka Góra, an artificial mound which is the highest point in Lodz, and waited for the New Year. I was alone, at first, but then suddenly half the town showed up, and they must have all been very drunk to have made it up the steep, slippery, snowy slope in their dress shoes and high heels. I applaud the precaution of those who carried sleds, to make the descent easier.
By the way, this is my last photo of Project 365 2010. I am doing it again, a fifth time, in 2011. Will you join me?
I'll write something about that later, after I take a New Year Nap, but meanwhile here is a link to my post from last year which explains Why You Should Totally Do It.

364/365: The airport fence
December 30th
To the left, of course. The easiest way to get to my horseriding place is to take the bus to the airport, then follow the fence South until you reach the stables. I wanted to take more photos but I think I grabbed the wrong battery that morning, and it ran out.

355/365: Christmas tree
Christmas trees are my job. When I was eight and we lived in the embassy, we had a fake one to save on cleanup, and it was my job to put it together. Then we went home- for a while, it was dad and me getting the trees together, but ever since he stopped driving and then sold the car, the task is all mine. I don't drive either, though...
When it snows, we don't ask anyone for a ride, I just go through the plot gardens and down to the skating rink with my sled:
They sell trees there every year. I bring it home...I set it up. I put the lights on. It stays like that for a day or so, and then we decorate it fully.
Then I go out three more times to get a second tree for the living room, and a couple big boughs of mistletoe. It's an exhausting tradition, but also a matter of pride.
(and it gets me away long enough not to have to do any of the stuff I really dislike, like helping with cooking and cleaning. I'd rather carry trees, thanks.)

350/365: New Year Resolution
2011 hasn't started yet, but I couldn't wait with my resolutions. One of them is to learn how to ride a horse. Because that is a pretty useful thing to know. In case of emergencies. Also, horsies are purty.
We went to the Wiki stables, right by the airport. It was cold, snowy, beautiful. After the lesson (which was hilarious, I've sat and been carried by horses before but I've never actually ridden one) the stablemaster let all the mares out to run around in the snow while she got a sled ready for a ride. A perfect day, really.
Next lesson just before New Year's. I really can't wait.

348/365: Manufaktura in the snow
This part of the old Poznanski factory has been turned into a hotel. A very expensive hotel...which is right across the street from a very poor and tumbledown neighbourhood. In contrast with the cleaned brick of the old factory the apartments on the other side of the road look even more desolate.

347/365: Caravan
Probably belongs to construction workers, although there's nothing being constructed anywhere near so I'm not sure. There was smoke coming out of the stovepipe. The building behind it is abandoned.
By the way, did you notice I've caught up with Project 365? I had a huge backlog of photos to post- they are all on the blog now. I think my resolution for 2011 is to upload and update more diligently. Why, yes, I'm doing p365 again. So should you.

340/365: Under the willow tree.
December 6th
When I was still a teenager, someone, I don't much recall who, planted a willow twig in my parents' back yard. Everyone said it would never take.

338/365: Snow
December 4th
This is why I wear tall, insulated wellingtons.
336/365: Even a bottle of rectified spirit...
December 2nd
...cannot substitute for Jesus.
Says the graffiti. Above, of course, the ŁKS football club brand. It's that neighbourhood.
333/365: Snow on my windowsill
And in just one day, we got about ten inches of snow. Lovely, lovely winter. :)
