172/365: Spinach, tomato, basil

172/365: Spinach, tomato, basil

June 21st

I had a friend over. She bought spinach, then left without eating it. I detest spinach, but I also detest wasting food, so I camouflaged it in a tomato, pepper and garlic sauce. Yum. :)

166/365: Waffles of the Eclipse

166/365: Waffles of the Eclipse
June 15th

We didn't see the moon at all, but the waffles were yummy. (in this photo: Kasia and Antek)
We used my paternal grandmother Helena's (may she rest in peace) famous waffle iron, a German-made relic from my childhood and unbeatable versus the weakling low-watt teflon irons of today. :P

Grandma Helena's waffle iron

Then we sat on the roof waiting for the eclipse, but we saw nothing. Clouds!!!

Waiting for the sunset

Oh, and I got a haircut that morning. Haircuts, much like bike rides and waffles, also help against a bad mood. Quod erat illustrandum:

April 24th

In Poland, on Easter Sunday, the first thing you eat is a slice of boiled egg. You go from person to person, wishing them a happy Easter...and whatever else you want them to be blessed with.

Then you get to eat everything else.

113/365: Family and assorted friends

113/365: Family and assorted friends
April 23rd

From left to right: Marcin, the Porzeziński Family (note Tosia hiding in the background), my dad, my mum, my sister and her boyfriend, imported from Barcelona.

In the photo, they are all standing by the Dominican Order Church, with their Easter Baskets in hand. Every year on Good Saturday, we take baskets filled with samples of the Easter meal to church where a priest blesses them:

Blessing the food

They're a symbol of all the food that will be on our table that year. It's like saying grace before a meal, but with a long-term warranty.

Afterwards we go look at the grave in the church (where I don't take photos because people are praying) and then we fill a bottle with holy water from a barrel set out on the church steps:

Holy water

Oh, and here's a bonus. My sister has a new boyfriend- David from Barcelona. Here they are in real life....

My sister and her boyfriend

...and in egg form.

I am told he painted her and she painted him.

April 22nd

Also some babas and wine, and a poppyseed cake. We made less than usual this year, because half the usual guests are over in Finland where my half-brother's daughter's husband relocated with his family to work on building a powerplant. So no great-grand-nephew or great-grand-niece will eat these, alas. Well, more for me!

February 26th

I made some granola yesterday, because the stuff you get in stores costs way too much, and always has raisins in it. I hate raisins!

So I bought a bag of spelt, a bag of barley, and a bag of rye, mixed it up with buckwheat honey (best honey ever ever), canola oil, cinnamon, baked it and then stirred in cumbled chocolate and walnuts. I'm set for breakfast for the next two months :P

Oh, and it made a good midnight snack. I'm building a website for a friend and...well, I'm not a programmer, so it's kind of uphill.

I'm going abroad for ten days and so all the food that could go bad had to be utilised. Colourful veggies!

That is powdered sugar in the jar, not celery, of course.

I got a special crepe pan from my mum for Christmas. Now I can't stop making crepes. It's so fast and easy. THANK YOU MUM

January 25th

A relic of the socialist days, invented as a local substitute for italian soft ice, warm ice cream is not actually ice cream but egg whites whipped with sugar and vinegar. I am very fond of this dessert, though it is insanely high in calories, so sweet it makes you dizzy, and has practically zero nutritional value...

January 12th

A small farm arrived at our market with a milk machine. They milk their cows, they bring the stuff over in a special fridge, and you can pay to fill a re-usable bottle. :) Fresh milk from that same morning, bypassing the big dairies and a whole lot of packaging and processing on the way. More money for the small farmer, tastier milk for me. I love it.

They invited me to visit their farm in the spring- I'm up for that. It's a nice 60 km or so round trip, perfect for biking, and I want to see the cows. :)

We made a few hundred. Should be enough for Christmas Eve Dinner. We're only six people this year instead of the usual dozen plus.
