172/365: Spinach, tomato, basil

172/365: Spinach, tomato, basil

June 21st

I had a friend over. She bought spinach, then left without eating it. I detest spinach, but I also detest wasting food, so I camouflaged it in a tomato, pepper and garlic sauce. Yum. :)

This is Źródliska Park, across the street from my old university and just behind the Cinematography Museum. We went there to see a collection of autochromes shot by the Lumiere brothers. They were amazing, and so was the weather.

We stopped at the park because my flatmate had some video art project she wanted to shoot using my other flatmate's Cheburashka doll:

And here is a tiny sample of the autochromes:

Someone decided that the iron-wrought fence around the Music Academy deserved a bit of colour. It counts as graffiti, I guess, vandalism...and that particular building is actually being kept in good shape, unlike the many others in the neighbourhood. So, I'm in two minds. I don't like when people spray over historic sites- but what an adorable idea, to have the leaves on the fence turn green in the middle of winter. :)

Same old story, my place is a construction hell, I am exhausted, so here is a last minute shot of my banana plant, a Musa Cavendish. I intend to get more of those, they're pretty, non-poisonous (I have cats, remember) and extremely cheap.

September 12th

Because it was Sunday, and it had rained a lot, and it is the season for mushrooms, my flatmate and I decided to go to the forest to engage in that well established traditional Slavic pastime, mushroom hunting.

Alas we were too cavalier about the whole enterprise and thus left too late, without any baskets, got lost along the way and finally decided that exploring the lush Rąbień forest was more fun than actually looking for edible funghi. We did see many families with full baskets, though.

But when you go to the woods this autumn, even if you are not harvesting, you should keep your eyes open and look low to the undergrowth.

Because there is so much more to a forest than mushrooms...

If you lie down in the bog...

Dung beetle

Frogpond

Mossy

Of course, if you do not find any edible mushrooms, you can still admire the less desirable ones.

Fallen star

Cluster

And then, when you least expect it, you may stumble upon a forest ghost story.

The uniform

In conclusion, mushroom hunting definitely deserves its high rank among treasured autumn activities.

Well, that was disappointing

Even if your harvest is nothing worth bragging about.

What I *was* supposed to do was to take a nice picture of my friend Marysia, but the only halfway decent photo I managed was this one of her holding an old pea she found on my kitchen table.

I cleaned the kitchen. Such achievements call for commemoration. Of course, the thyme would be in focus...I am not. There's only so much I can do with a tripod and broken 50mm lens (it doesn't autofocus).

June 12th

The twins had mentioned something about leaving, but no one took them seriously until they started packing. This was their last weekend at my place, and so we decided to take One Last Bike Trip. Basia was missing as she is in the USA studying and doing research for her new film, but everyone else was there: the twins, Asia (whom I have no pictures of), ManiaKovalsky, Maciek, and me.

We got horribly lost along the way and never made it to the forest or the pond we'd expected to find, but it was wonderful at 55 km total.

You knew this would happen- I got home, had to go back to work, and have no time for interesting photos. Sorry. And I had to finish off the roll of film, too...
