225/365 Music at the market

August 13th

These musicians show up at the market near my place on most Saturdays. They play what are called courtyard songs, songs from the city streets about love, adventure, and urban legends.

I always drop a few coins in their hat. I love music in my neighbourhood, and street bands like this one have become rare.

224/365 Memories of the fairground

August 12th

Another evening filled with work. These poor man yoyos hang on my doorknob, I got them at the fair.

Jan said there were kittens in his courtyard. They hissed and hid in the basement, so I could not take a picture of them. So I took one of this empty sign, instead.

If you know for a fact that it is not an almond, please be so kind as to not shatter my dreams.

What I *was* supposed to do was to take a nice picture of my friend Marysia, but the only halfway decent photo I managed was this one of her holding an old pea she found on my kitchen table.

July 31st

Particularly glorious in the sunshine. You can get anything you want on that corner- there's a daily market with everything from bread and eggs to beef and eggplants, there's a confectioner, a bakery, three tanning salons, six florists, a butcher shop, two pharmacies, two herbal remedy stores, two Asian take-aways, a watchmaker, a bookmaker, three 24h liquor stores, two electric supply shops, a gardening store, a fake flower shop, a scrap metal buyer, two cobblers, a photo print shop, a second-hand clothes shop, a jeans store, a discount tchotchke shop, and four or five little grocery stores which somehow still hold on despite the raging competition.

I love living here.

Why am I not around so much?

Because:

Ten more days (because that is my deadline) and I will be back at normal speed.

July 25th

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is another wonderful place to go. It's been in operation since at least the 13th century and is now nine levels and 327 metres deep, with over 300 kilometres of corridors running underground. Once again I took my foreign friends to visit it, taking both the regular tourist tour and then later a special walk through parts of the mine which are not open to tourists. Unfortunately they forgot to tell us that we could not bring any battery-operated cameras due to the methane- any spark from an electrical switch is a fire hazard down there. I suppose most of the time it was too dark to take photos anyway. All we had for light were our headlamps.

The photo above is from the regular tour, which is fantastic all by itself, but the off-trail tour really complements it. I heartily recommend it to anyone planning to visit Wieliczka.

July 24th

A few people from work really wanted to go visit the Salt Mines, so we made it a weekend in Cracow. This is the view from the belltower in the castle cathedral up on Wawel Hill. I insisted on taking them up to see the Sigismund Bell, as it is my favourite place to go when in the royal city, touristy as it might be.
